← Back to Charlotte

Charlotte has one of the best brewery scenes in the Southeast and it keeps getting better. South End alone has more taprooms within walking distance than most American cities have total. The Rail Trail corridor runs right through the middle of it, connecting breweries, restaurants, and bars on foot. Here is where to drink and what to order.

South End Breweries

Triple C Brewing Company

Triple C is one of the anchors of South End's brewery scene. Their taproom on Griffith Street has a massive outdoor space, one of the best beer gardens in the city, and the beer quality is consistently high. The Drivin' Nails IPA is their flagship and it earns its reputation. The seasonal releases are worth tracking. Triple C handles large crowds well and the food truck rotation is reliable.

South End Charlotte NC

Wooden Robot Brewery

Wooden Robot on South Tryon Street is smaller and more craft focused than the big South End names. The barrel aged program is the reason to visit. Their barrel aged stouts and sours are consistently among the best beers made in Charlotte. Limited releases sell out fast. The taproom is intimate and unpretentious.

Protagonist Brewing

Protagonist has a taproom at 227 Southside Dr in the Lower South End (LoSo) area, just south of the main Rail Trail corridor. The brewing is technically precise and the taproom has a well curated feel. Worth adding to a South End brewery day if you have the time.

NoDa Breweries

Free Range Brewing

Free Range on North Davidson in NoDa leans creative. They experiment more than most Charlotte breweries, rotating styles, unusual ingredients, and smaller batch releases you will not find elsewhere. The taproom is comfortable and the bartenders can talk through the menu if you are unsure what to order. This is the place to go when you want something beyond the standard IPA.

NoDa Brewing Company

NoDa Brewing is Charlotte's pioneering craft brewery. It has been here since before South End exploded and it is still going strong. The flagship Hop Drop 'n Roll IPA is one of the best known craft beers in the state. The main public taproom is now at 150 W 32nd St at their North End facility, the original North Davidson taproom permanently closed in late 2024. If you are visiting Charlotte's NoDa arts district, take the short drive to North End for the full taproom experience.

Heist Brewery and Artisan Ales

Heist in NoDa is part brewery, part restaurant. The brewing program covers lagers, IPAs, and creative seasonals. The food menu is more serious than most taprooms. This is a full dinner option, not just bar snacks. Good for groups who want food and beer without choosing between the two.

Uptown and Beyond

Sugar Creek Brewing

Sugar Creek in Lower South End takes a different approach. They focus heavily on Belgian styles and lagers, which sets them apart from the IPA forward taprooms that dominate the scene. The Belgian tripel and the witbier are excellent. A good stop if you want something more sessionable and less hoppy.

How To Do the Rail Trail Brewery Crawl

The Rail Trail runs along the light rail line from South End into Uptown. The stretch between Bland Street and Camden Road has the highest concentration of breweries. Start at Triple C on Griffith Street, walk north along the trail to Wooden Robot on South Tryon. From there you can continue north toward Club West Brewing or Suffolk Punch on the Rail Trail. The whole South End stretch is walkable in an afternoon. Take the light rail back to Uptown or into South End if you are staying downtown.
