← Back to The Coast

Bald Head Island NC is one of the most peaceful places on the entire NC coast. To get there you take a 20 minute ferry from Southport NC. No cars are allowed on the island. You get around by golf cart or by bike. The beaches are quiet, the sea turtles nest here every summer, and the oldest lighthouse in NC stands at the southern tip.

How To Get To Bald Head Island

The only way to reach Bald Head Island is by ferry from Indigo Plantation Marina in Southport NC. The ferry is run by Bald Head Island Limited and costs about $26 round trip for adults. The ride takes about 20 minutes. Ferries run multiple times a day. Book tickets in advance at baldheadisland.com, especially in summer.

There is no bridge to the island. No cars are allowed. You will need to rent a golf cart or bike on the island if you want to get around beyond walking distance.

Things To Do on Bald Head Island

Visit Old Baldy Lighthouse

Old Baldy is the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. It was built in 1817 and still stands at the southern end of the island. You can climb to the top for views of Cape Fear and the ocean. Admission is a few dollars and the attached museum tells the story of the lighthouse and the island.

Relax on the Beaches

The beaches on Bald Head Island are beautiful and uncrowded. The east side faces the Atlantic. The south side has wider beaches. Because the island has no cars, the beach experience is very peaceful. You can walk for long stretches without seeing many people.

Sea Turtle Nesting

Bald Head Island is one of the most important sea turtle nesting areas in NC. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches from May through August. The Bald Head Island Conservancy runs nest monitoring programs and offers turtle walks at night during nesting season. A truly special experience.

Rent a Golf Cart

Golf carts are the primary way to get around the island. Several rental companies on the island offer them by the hour or full day. Pick one up as soon as you get off the ferry and explore at your own pace.

Day Trip vs Overnight Stay

Bald Head Island works well as a day trip from Wilmington or the surrounding area. You can catch an early ferry, spend the day on the island, and return in the evening. For a more relaxed experience, renting a cottage or condo for a night or two lets you see the island at sunset and sunrise when it is most beautiful.
