ABOUT WILMINGTON

The Cape Fear Coast's Biggest City, And One of the South's Best

Wilmington is the largest city on the North Carolina coast and one of the most historically significant port cities in the South. It sits on the Cape Fear River about 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and has been a hub of commerce, culture, and coast life since its founding in 1739. The historic downtown and Riverwalk run along the waterfront for 1.75 miles, past restaurants, shops, the Battleship North Carolina moored across the river, and some of the most distinctive architecture on the NC coast.

What surprises most visitors is Wilmington's film history. The city is one of the top film production destinations in the United States, and the credits go back decades. One Tree Hill filmed here for nine seasons. Dawson's Creek used Wilmington as its backdrop throughout its run. Iron Man 3 shot at EUE/Screen Gems Studios. More than 60 major productions have filmed in and around Wilmington, you will recognize the streets if you know what to look for.

The beaches surrounding Wilmington give the city a coastal range that few places can match. Wrightsville Beach is 15 minutes away, one of the best surf beaches near a major city anywhere in the Southeast. Carolina Beach has a boardwalk, an amusement park atmosphere, and Freeman Park for beach camping. Kure Beach is quieter, with Fort Fisher State Historic Site and one of the three NC Aquariums at its southern tip. Together they make Wilmington one of the most complete coastal destinations in North Carolina.
