The Blowing Rock is the oldest paid travel attraction in North Carolina. It has been drawing visitors since 1933. Sitting at 4,000 feet above sea level, this rocky outcrop overlooks the Johns River Gorge which drops 3,000 feet below. The views are stunning no matter what time of year you visit.
Long ago in the 1800s, a Cherokee brave fell in love with a Chickasaw princess near this spot. He had to leave her to return to his tribe. Standing on the rock, he jumped into the gorge below. She prayed for the winds to bring him back. And they did. Strong winds blew up from the gorge and carried him back to her arms. That is how The Blowing Rock got its name.
The rocky walls of the gorge cause strong winds to blow upward with great force. Objects tossed over the edge can actually come back up. This even made it into Ripley's Believe It or Not as "the only place in the world where snow falls upside down."
The Blowing Rock has a beautiful observation area, a waterfall, an observation tower, and a gift shop. It is disability accessible and pet friendly (on a leash). The views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are incredible.

The Blowing Rock is one of those places that is hard to describe until you see it for yourself. Plan at least 45 minutes to walk around and take it all in.
