The North Carolina Azalea Festival is Wilmington's biggest annual event and one of the most beloved spring festivals in the entire South. It runs for five days every April, timed to the peak bloom of the region's azaleas, and spreads across more than 30 events spanning multiple venues across the city. Airlie Gardens is one of the crown jewel venues. The festival has been running every single year since 1948. If you are anywhere near the NC coast in early April, this is worth planning your trip around.

What Is the NC Azalea Festival

The NC Azalea Festival is a five day community celebration that began in 1948. It was the idea of Dr. W. Houston Moore, who gathered Wilmington's civic clubs together at the Chamber of Commerce in 1947 to plan it. The first festival was held in April 1948 and it has run every year since. As of 2026 the festival is in its 79th year, making it one of the longest running community festivals in the American South.

The festival blends Southern garden culture, live music concerts, a grand parade, historic home tours, garden parties at Airlie Gardens, a street fair, and dozens of smaller community events into a week that feels genuinely special. It draws visitors from across the Southeast who come specifically for the azalea bloom.

When and Where

The 2026 NC Azalea Festival runs April 8 to 12, 2026. Events take place across multiple venues throughout Wilmington including downtown, the Riverfront Park, Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, the Battleship North Carolina, and Airlie Gardens at 300 Airlie Road.

The timing of the festival is intentional. The Wilmington area azalea season peaks in early to mid April, and the city takes full advantage. Airlie Gardens alone contains more than 75,000 azaleas plus 60,000 tulips in bloom during festival week, making it one of the most photogenic spots in all of North Carolina during that window.

Airlie Gardens and the Festival

Airlie Gardens is a 67 acre public garden at 300 Airlie Road in Wilmington that has been in existence since 1901. It was originally created as a private estate garden and is now owned by New Hanover County. The garden is open year round but it is most spectacular during azalea season in April when tens of thousands of azaleas bloom across the grounds.

During the NC Azalea Festival, Airlie Gardens hosts two major events:

Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour: A walking tour through the full 67 acre garden during peak bloom. With over 75,000 azaleas, 60,000 tulips, towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and reflection ponds, this is one of the most beautiful garden walks in the entire state. Tickets required.

The Airlie Luncheon Garden Party: A prestigious ticketed event held at Airlie Gardens on Friday, April 10, 2026. This is one of the most storied traditions of the entire festival week and sells out every year. Note that tickets for the Garden Party must be picked up at the Festival Ticket Office at 5725 Oleander Drive no later than the day before the event. They are not available online for this specific event.

The grounds also contain the Airlie Oak, a live oak estimated to be over 450 years old and one of the most photographed trees in North Carolina. It is worth visiting even outside of festival week, but seeing it framed by thousands of blooming azaleas in April is something else entirely.

The Grand Parade

The Grand Parade is one of the most attended events of the entire festival. It runs on Saturday along 3rd Street through downtown Wilmington and draws thousands of spectators from across the region. The parade features floats, marching bands, the Azalea Queen and her court, and a range of community groups and organizations. It is completely free to watch.

Arrive early to claim a good spot along the parade route. The streets fill up quickly on Saturday morning.

Concerts at Live Oak Bank Pavilion

The main stage concerts are one of the highlights of festival week. They are held at Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington. The 2026 concert lineup includes Lil Jon and country artist Dustin Lynch among the headliners on Friday evening.

Concert tickets are sold through Etix with multiple seating tiers: VIP Boxes, Orchestra Pit, Reserved Seating, and General Admission Lawn. Tickets sell out for the headliner shows so buy them well in advance if you plan to attend.

Free Events at the Festival

A large number of the NC Azalea Festival's best events are completely free. You do not need to spend a dime to have a great time during festival week. Free events include:

Ticketed Events

In addition to the free events, several of the festival's most sought after experiences require tickets:

For concert tickets and most ticketed events, the official platform is Etix: etix.com/ticket/v/6409/nc azalea festival. For questions about specific events, the Festival Ticket Office can be reached at (910) 216 9401 and is open Monday through Sunday 9 AM to 5 PM.

The Azalea Queen Tradition

One of the most distinctive traditions of the NC Azalea Festival is the selection of an Azalea Queen each year. The Queen is traditionally a notable actress, entertainer, or public figure who is crowned during a ceremony aboard the Battleship North Carolina and presides over festival events throughout the week.

Past Azalea Queens have included major names from film and television over the festival's nearly 80 year history. The 2026 Azalea Queen is actress Elaine Hendrix, best known for her role in The Parent Trap.

Getting There and Parking

Wilmington is easily accessible by car from anywhere in the Carolinas. If you are coming from Charlotte it is about a 3 hour drive. From Raleigh it is about 2.5 hours. From the Triangle area most visitors take I 40 East all the way to Wilmington.

Parking during festival week requires planning. The main downtown events use the existing downtown parking decks and surface lots. Most parking decks off Front Street and 3rd Street are good options for the parade and street fair. For Airlie Gardens specifically, on site parking is very limited. Airlie only allows parking passes that are included in sponsor packages. Most visitors should plan to park off site and walk or take a rideshare to the gardens.

The NC Azalea Festival website has an interactive festival map at ncazaleafestival.org showing all event venues across Wilmington to help with planning.
