Downtown Wilmington is one of the best historic downtowns in the South. The Cape Fear River runs along the western edge of the city and the Riverwalk follows it for nearly two miles. The historic district has brick paved streets, 19th century architecture, independent restaurants, boutique shops, live music, and some of the best people watching in North Carolina. And then there is the film industry, which has made Wilmington one of the most surprising cities on the coast.

The Riverwalk

The Wilmington Riverwalk stretches 1.75 miles along the Cape Fear River from downtown north through the Soda Pop District. It is one of the best urban waterfront walks in NC. The boardwalk connects parks, restaurants, bars, and docks with views of the river and of the Battleship North Carolina moored on the far bank.

On weekend evenings the Riverwalk comes alive with outdoor diners, street performers, and people watching the sunset over the water. The south end of the Riverwalk near the convention center has a large open plaza with seating. The north end gets quieter and more residential.

You can rent kayaks and paddleboards from several outfitters along the Riverwalk to explore the river from the water. It is a great way to see the downtown skyline from a different perspective.

Battleship North Carolina

The Battleship North Carolina is moored directly across the Cape Fear River from downtown, visible from the Riverwalk. It is a World War II battleship that served in every major naval offensive in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 and earned 15 battle stars. Today it is a museum ship and one of the most visited attractions in the entire state.

The Historic District

Wilmington has one of the largest collections of 19th century architecture in the South. The historic district covers much of the downtown core and features hundreds of antebellum and Victorian era homes and commercial buildings. The historic district is a National Historic Landmark.

Front Street is the main commercial corridor with restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and galleries. Market Street and the surrounding blocks are great for walking and browsing. The Cotton Exchange on Front Street is a restored 1800s warehouse complex with shops and restaurants built inside the original brick and timber frame building.

The Bellamy Mansion at 503 Market Street is one of the finest antebellum mansions in the South. It is open for guided tours and is worth a visit to understand the complex history of the city before and after the Civil War.

Wilmington's Film Industry

Wilmington is one of the top film production cities in the United States. EUE Screen Gems Studios, located just east of downtown, is the largest studio complex east of Los Angeles. Dozens of major films and television shows have been made here including Iron Man 3, Firestarter, Sleepy Hollow, Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, Surface, and many others.

The city has a long connection to the film industry going back to the 1980s when Dino De Laurentiis built the original studio complex. Today the industry is a major part of Wilmington's economy and culture. You will occasionally see film crews working in downtown locations.

There is no formal film tour of the studios but Wilmington has a self guided film locations map that you can get from the visitors center or find online. Many of the One Tree Hill and Dawson's Creek filming locations are accessible in and around downtown.

Where To Eat in Downtown Wilmington

Downtown Wilmington has one of the best restaurant scenes on the NC coast. A few recommendations across different price points:

Rx Chicken & Oysters: The rebranded concept at the iconic converted pharmacy space on Castle Street. Focused on fried chicken and raw bar, with the same commitment to quality sourcing that made the original Rx famous.

The Basics: A downtown counter service spot with excellent sandwiches, salads, and soups. Great for a quick lunch.

Elijah's Restaurant: Seafood and American food with a great waterfront view on the Riverwalk. Solid casual option if you want to eat with a river view.
