Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. It stands 198 feet tall on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of NC. Climbing the 257 steps to the top gives you one of the best views anywhere on the East Coast. Looking out over the barrier islands with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Pamlico Sound on the other is truly unforgettable.
The History of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
The first lighthouse on this spot was built in 1803. The current lighthouse was built in 1870. It was needed because this stretch of the Atlantic is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the dangerous Diamond Shoals offshore. More than 1,000 ships have sunk near this spot over the centuries.
The lighthouse has its famous black and white spiral stripe pattern. It was designed that way so ships could identify it in the daytime.
The Famous 1999 Move
In the late 1990s the ocean had eroded so much of the beach that the lighthouse was in danger of falling into the sea. Engineers made the extraordinary decision to move the entire lighthouse. In 1999 the 4,800 ton lighthouse was slowly moved 2,900 feet inland on a special track system. It took 23 days. Today it sits safely in a new location and is one of the most famous engineering stories in American history.
Climbing the Lighthouse
The Climb
The lighthouse has 257 steps up a spiral staircase. It takes most people 15 to 20 minutes to climb to the top. The staircase is narrow and can feel tight in places. The view from the top is worth every step.
Tickets and Hours
Lighthouse climbs are offered from mid April through mid October. You must buy tickets in advance at recreation.gov. Tickets are timed and sell out on popular days, especially summer weekends. Adults cost around $10 per person.
Height Restrictions
You must be at least 42 inches tall to climb. The NPS recommends that people with heart conditions, breathing problems, or a fear of heights skip the climb and enjoy the grounds instead.
What Else To See
Beyond the lighthouse, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore has beautiful beaches, great fishing, and wildlife including sea turtles that nest nearby in summer. The Museum of the Sea at the lighthouse grounds has exhibits on the history of the lighthouse and the shipwrecks offshore. Hatteras Village just south has restaurants and the ferry to Ocracoke Island.
