The Graveyard Fields hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC is one of the most rewarding easy hikes in western NC. In just a couple of miles you pass two waterfalls through a wide open high elevation meadow. The views, the water sounds, and the wide trail make this a great pick for all skill levels.

Why It Is Called Graveyard Fields

The name comes from the tree stumps that used to cover the meadow after a fire in the early 1900s. The stumps looked like tombstones scattered across the field. The trees are long gone now but the name stuck. Today the meadow is open and grassy with a creek running through it.

The Trail

The Graveyard Fields Loop is about 3.3 miles total. You can shorten it by going out and back to just one waterfall. The trail starts at the Graveyard Fields Overlook parking area at Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 418.8.

Second Falls

Head down the main trail from the parking area and you will reach Second Falls in about 0.5 miles. This is the bigger and more impressive of the two falls. The water drops about 60 feet into a pool below. This is the most popular stop and the most photographed.

Upper Falls

Continue past Second Falls and follow the trail upstream to reach Upper Falls. This one is shorter but has a nice swimming hole below it in summer. The round trip to both falls from the parking lot is about 3.3 miles.

Parking

The parking lot at Milepost 418.8 fills up fast on weekends and fall days. Arrive before 9am to get a spot. If the lot is full, there is limited roadside parking nearby but it fills fast too. A weekday visit is much easier for parking.
