On a clear day you can see the Great Smoky Mountains in one direction and the Black Mountains in the other. It is the kind of view that makes you stop and just stand there for a while.

About Max Patch

Max Patch is a grassy bald summit on the Appalachian Trail. Unlike most mountain summits, the top is wide open with no trees. You can see 360 degrees around you. The AT passes right through the top. Many through hikers stop here and call it one of the best spots on the whole trail from Georgia to Maine.

The Hike

The main loop trail is about 1.4 miles and is rated moderate. The elevation gain is around 350 feet. It takes most people 45 minutes to an hour to complete the loop. There is also a shorter out and back option of about 0.7 miles if you just want to get to the top and come back.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow. It gets muddy after rain so wear shoes with traction. The top can be very windy and much colder than the parking lot, so bring a jacket even in summer.

Reservations (Important)

Max Patch requires a parking reservation on weekends and holidays from spring through fall. The reservation is required and the lot fills up fast. Go to recreation.gov to book your spot. On weekdays no reservation is needed but the lot still fills up quickly in fall.

Best Time To Go

Fall (October) is the most popular time and the views are stunning with color all around. Sunrise and sunset are magical from the summit. If you can make it for sunrise, set your alarm. The golden light over the mountains is worth the early wake up call.

Spring and summer are also great. Wildflowers bloom in May and June. Summer mornings are clear and cool.
