The NC coast runs for more than 300 miles from the Virginia border to the South Carolina line. Along the way it passes through three very different regions: the Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast, and Wilmington. Each region has its own character and its own calendar of annual events that locals plan their year around. This is a complete list of the best of them, organized by region and by season.
Outer Banks Events
The Outer Banks is a 100 mile string of barrier islands off the NC coast. The event calendar here skews heavily toward the outdoors: seafood, fishing tournaments, hang gliding, pirate history, and beach culture. Summer is peak season but fall is when some of the best events happen and the crowds thin out.
SPRING
Multi venue culinary festival across Outer Banks restaurants featuring chef driven dinners, wine and beer tastings, seafood menus, cooking classes, a chowder cook off, and food competitions. One of the best food events on the entire coast. Individual event tickets vary. Many events sell out well in advance.
The largest St. Patrick's Day parade in North Carolina. More than 100 entrants, 8,000 or more spectators, and a one mile route along the beach road in Nags Head. Free to watch.
A solemn annual ceremony honoring the British sailors lost when the HMS Bedfordshire was torpedoed off the OBX coast in 1942. The small British Cemetery on Ocracoke hosts the event with bagpipes, readings, and a 21 gun salute. One of the most moving events on the coast and free to attend.
Flat coastal race courses on Ocracoke Island with post run parties. A fundraiser for Ocracoke Community Radio and local programs. A fun event that draws runners from across the state who want to race on one of the most scenic and remote barrier islands on the East Coast.
SUMMER
The longest running hang gliding competition in the world. Professional pilots from across the country compete over Jockey's Ridge State Park, the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast. A genuinely spectacular thing to watch and free for spectators. One of the most unique events in the state.
Three separate great options for Independence Day on the OBX. Duck Town Park throws one of the best small town 4th celebrations in the country according to ABC News. Manteo has an all day festival with Island Farm activities and fireworks at dusk. Ocracoke has a flag raising, sand sculpture contest, lighthouse tours, a vintage car show, and a parade.
Women's offshore fishing tournament based at Pirate's Cove Marina in Manteo. Includes a costume contest and boat decorating competition alongside serious offshore fishing competition. One of several prestigious fishing tournaments held on the OBX each summer.
FALL

Four days of waterfront bluegrass music at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. Features major performing acts, a band competition, food and crafts vendors, and a setting that makes the whole thing feel like something out of another era. One of the best music events on the entire coast.
Three days of interactive living history, pirate encampment, music, and a cannon salute reenactment on Ocracoke Island. The connection is genuine: Blackbeard the pirate was killed just off Ocracoke in 1718 and the island takes its pirate history seriously. Great for families and genuinely fun.
Teams build flying keg contraptions and launch them off a ramp over the water at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head. Craft beer garden, local food, live music, and a kids zone. One of the most fun and absurd events on the coast, in the best possible way.
Free admission to the Wright Brothers National Memorial on December 17 each year, the anniversary of the first powered airplane flight in 1903. Special program with guest speakers and historical presentations. A genuinely moving event to attend in person at the spot where aviation history was made.
Crystal Coast Events
The Crystal Coast covers Beaufort, Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and the surrounding areas of Carteret County. It has a quieter, more local feeling event calendar than the OBX with a strong emphasis on maritime heritage, seafood, and waterfront culture. The NC Seafood Festival in Morehead City is the crown jewel of the fall calendar.
WINTER AND SPRING
A celebration of the Core Sound region's tradition of hand carved waterfowl decoys. One of the most authentic folk art events on the NC coast. The carving tradition here goes back generations and the festival showcases both master carvers and emerging artists.
Tastings, spa events, and chocolate themed activities at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. A sweeter option for a late winter weekend on the coast.
A beloved annual event celebrating wooden boat heritage at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. The 2026 event is the 50th anniversary. Features boat displays, workshops, demonstrations, and exhibits covering the full history of wooden boat building on the NC coast.
One of the largest whole hog pork BBQ competitions in the entire state. Teams from across NC compete over an open pit for serious prizes. A true NC experience. The smell alone is worth the drive.

Colorful kite flying festival on the beach at Atlantic Beach. Stunt kite fliers, traditional kites, and giant display kites. A low key, genuinely fun event that is perfect for families.
Wilmington and Cape Fear Coast Events
Wilmington has the most diverse event calendar on the NC coast. As a real city with a university, a major film industry, and a thriving food and arts scene, it has year round events that go well beyond the usual coastal fare. The NC Azalea Festival is the crown jewel of the spring calendar. The Cape Fear Coast also has some of the most interesting fall events in the state.
