Beaufort in bloom, calm water excellent for kayaking to Carrot Island, very few crowds, and one of the best times to spot the wild horses on the island.

Water stays warm through October, excellent fishing along the entire coast, smaller crowds throughout, and great conditions for Fort Macon and Cape Lookout day trips.
One of the oldest and most charming waterfront towns in North Carolina. Founded in 1709, the historic district is beautifully preserved, the waterfront on Taylor's Creek is genuinely lovely, and the wild horses on Carrot Island are just five minutes away by kayak. It is a town that surprises nearly everyone who visits.
One of the least developed and clearest water stretches of coast in North Carolina
A herd of wild horses has roamed this uninhabited barrier island for over 400 years
One of North Carolina's oldest towns, with a waterfront boardwalk and maritime museum
Undeveloped barrier islands accessible only by ferry, no cars, no hotels
The Crystal Coast stretches from Emerald Isle through Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, and down toward Cape Lookout, one of the least developed and most genuinely beautiful sections of the East Coast. The name comes from the clarity of the water, which runs cleaner and more transparent than the surf farther north, particularly along the Bogue Banks and the beaches around Cape Lookout.
Beaufort, the third oldest town in North Carolina, anchors the inner coast with a maritime museum, a waterfront boardwalk, and a personality entirely distinct from the beach towns nearby. Just offshore, Shackleford Banks is home to a herd of wild horses that has lived on the island for over 400 years, descendants of Spanish mustangs, accessible only by ferry. Cape Lookout National Seashore protects 56 miles of barrier islands with no commercial development, no roads, and the iconic black and white diamond patterned lighthouse at the southern tip.
Bogue Banks, which runs from Emerald Isle through Pine Knoll Shores and Indian Beach to Atlantic Beach, has the most beach town infrastructure and the majority of the vacation rentals. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of the three state aquariums and one of the most visited attractions on the coast. The Crystal Coast is the part of North Carolina's shoreline that rewards the visitors who take their time.
