North Carolina has some of the best small towns in the country. Most of them are not on anyone's list. You find them by accident or by asking the right local. This list covers the ones worth going out of your way for, from the mountains to the coast to the places in between that most people drive right past.

1. Blowing Rock

Mountains

A small mountaintop village at 4,000 feet with great restaurants, good shops, and one of the best views of the Blue Ridge. The population is under 2,000 but the town punches well above its size. Main Street has real character. Go in fall when the color hits the ridges around it. The view from the Blowing Rock overlook is not something you forget.

2. Beaufort

Crystal Coast

NC's third oldest town sits on the Crystal Coast with a waterfront boardwalk and old houses that date back to the 1700s. Look across the water from the boardwalk and you can see Carrot Island, where wild horses live. This is the best small coastal town in the state, more interesting and less crowded than anything on the Outer Banks.

3. Brevard

Mountains

Brevard is the base camp for Pisgah National Forest. There are waterfalls 20 minutes in every direction. The town is known for its white squirrel population. They are real and they are everywhere. It is a great stop between Asheville and the Smokies, and it has better food than you would expect for its size.

4. Hillsborough

Piedmont

A Colonial era town just west of Durham with a strong arts scene, good restaurants, and a forgotten NASCAR track called the Occoneechee Speedway hidden in the woods at the edge of town. The track closed in 1968 and is now a walking trail. The town itself is old and interesting in a way that Chapel Hill and Durham have lost by growing too fast.

5. Elkin

Yadkin Valley

The gateway to Yadkin Valley wine country. There is a craft brewery on a creek, more than 40 wineries within 30 minutes, and a cool Main Street that most people have never seen. Elkin is the kind of town that makes you wonder why more people do not know about it.

6. Love Valley

Piedmont

The only town in North Carolina where cars are banned. Horses are tied up on Main Street. The storefronts are wooden. There is a rodeo. Love Valley is one of the most unusual places in the state and it is completely real. Take the detour. It is worth it.

7. Southport

Coast

A quiet port town at the mouth of the Cape Fear River with brick storefronts, shrimp boats in the harbor, and the ferry to Bald Head Island leaving from the dock. Southport is easy and charming. It does not try too hard. That is what makes it good.

8. Black Mountain

Mountains

Just east of Asheville, Black Mountain has its own arts and music scene and does not need Asheville's help. It is cheaper, calmer, and a great base for hiking in the Black Mountain range, which has several of the highest peaks in the eastern US. Go when Asheville feels too crowded.

9. Bryson City

Mountains

On the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad running right through town. Bryson City has the best whitewater rafting access in the state. The Nantahala River is a few minutes away. It is a small town that does outdoor adventure well.

10. Ocracoke

Outer Banks

Only accessible by ferry. The village is tiny, slow, and one of a kind. There is a British cemetery from WWII, wild ponies near the lighthouse, and the best beach in the state. It is long, empty, and quiet. Ocracoke is what the Outer Banks used to feel like before it was discovered.

11. Salisbury

Piedmont

One of the most underappreciated historic towns in the Piedmont. Salisbury has a genuine downtown with antique shops, local restaurants, and a stretch of Innes Street that looks like it belongs in a movie set in 1950. It is also the home of Cheerwine, the NC born cherry soft drink that still gets bottled here. The Historic Salisbury Foundation has done real work keeping the old buildings standing. This is a town that deserves more visitors than it gets.

12. Saxapahaw

Piedmont

A converted mill village on the Haw River west of Chapel Hill. One great restaurant in the old mill, a river trail behind it, and music festivals in summer. Saxapahaw is a hidden Piedmont gem that most people who live 30 minutes away have never visited. That is a mistake.

13. Boone

Mountains

College mountain town with Appalachian State at its center. Good food, strong outdoor access, and a true mountain feel all year. Boone is livelier than most small mountain towns without losing the character that makes mountain towns worth visiting. It has real winters too, which is not nothing.

14. Edenton

Albemarle Sound

One of the most beautiful Colonial towns on the East Coast. Edenton sits on Albemarle Sound with water views, historic homes, and kayaking that puts you right out onto the sound. Almost nobody goes here. It is the most underrated town in the state by a wide margin.

15. Pittsboro

Chatham County

A small Chatham County town with a big local food movement, a historic courthouse square, and good dining just 20 minutes from Chapel Hill. Pittsboro has figured out how to be a small town with real character without turning into a tourist destination. It is still just a good place to eat and walk around.

16. Washington

Inner Banks

The original Washington, named two years before the more famous one. Little Washington sits on the Pamlico River on the Inner Banks, with a waterfront that is walkable, uncrowded, and genuinely beautiful. It is the kind of historic waterfront town that would be packed if it were on the coast, but most people drive straight past it on the way to the Outer Banks. That is their loss. Great for kayaking, the Pamlico County farmers market, and exploring a piece of NC history that most people have never heard of.
